Magi, and Redeemed of St. James
“Today Christ is born, today the Savior has appeared; today the angels sing on earth, the archangels rejoice; today the upright shout out for joy: Glory be to God on high, Alleluia! This is the evening prayer antiphon for the Feast of the Nativity, may it be as true for us this Christmas as it has been for the last two millennia!
The “Christmas Season” includes the Feasts of the Nativity, the Holy Family, Mary the Mother of God, Epiphany of the Lord, and Baptism of the Lord. These Celebrations bring powerful images that THIS DAY, in our day, in our lives, in our time and place: there is light in the midst of darkness, peace is possible, joy is present in our struggle, enemies will be reconciled, families will survive difficulties and celebrate blessings. We pray and walk through the history of salvation, because it is our history, our future and most important our present.
This past Monday I had the privilege of blessing a new Habitat for Humanity house for our parishioners Maria Aguayo & Leo Rodriguez and their son Jonathan. This is the 97th Habitat house built in Kearney. Thirty years ago, St. James parishioners were part of the leadership group who brought this nonprofit housing organization to Kearney. Habitat’s vision is of a world where everyone has a decent place to live.
When a St. James parishioner receives a house, Sr. Catherine and I are invited to bless the house. I believe this is at least the fifth house we have blessed since I’ve been the pastor of St. James. Our parishioners continue to make up a significant number of the leaders and volunteers working on the houses. One half, $21,186, of the 2023 third Sunday of the month collection for Habitat for Humanity and the Jubilee Center went to support Habitat’s work in Kearney. Many people speak to me of their gratitude for St. James support. Christmas time is a wonderful time of the year to pass this affirmation and gratitude on to all of you! Thank You, Thank You, Thank You!
The Gospel for Christmas morning Mass is from John 1:1-18, here are verses 3b-5: “What came to be through him was life, and this life was the light of the human race; the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” May this life and light fill all of you during the Christmas Season and throughout the New Year.

“Hoy nació Cristo, hoy el Salvador a aparecido; hoy los ángeles cantan en la tierra, los arcángeles regocijan; hoy el grito erguido de alegría: Gloria a Dios en lo Alto, ¡Aleluya!¡Esta es la oración de la tarde de la antífona de la Fiesta de la Natividad, que sea tan cierto para nosotros en esta Navidad como ha sido por los últimos dos milenios!
Madre de Dios, Epifanía del Señor y Bautizo del Señor. Estas celebraciones traen poderosas imágenes que HOY en DIA, en nuestros días, en nuestra vida, en nuestro tiempo y lugar: hay luz en medio de la oscuridad, paz es posible, jubilación está presente en nuestra lucha, los enemigos se reconciliarán, familias sobreviran las dificultades y celebraran las bendiciones. Oremos y caminamos por la historia de la salvación porque es nuestra historia, nuestro futuro y más importante nuestro presente.
El lunes pasado tuve el privilegio de bendecir una nueva casa de Hábitat para la Humanidad para nuestros feligreses María Aguayo y Leo Rodríguez y su hijo Jonathan. Esta es la casa número 97 de Hábitat construida en Kearney. Hace treinta años, los feligreses de St. James formaron parte del grupo de liderazgo que trajo esta organización de vivienda sin fines de lucro a Kearney. La visión de Hábitat es la de un mundo donde todos tengan un lugar digno para vivir.
Cuando un feligrés de St. James recibe una casa, la Hna. Catherine y yo somos invitadas a bendecir la casa. Creo que esta es al menos la quinta casa que hemos bendecido desde que soy párroco de St. James. Nuestros feligreses continúan constituyendo un número significativo de líderes y voluntarios que trabajan en las casas. La mitad, $21,186, de la colecta del tercer domingo del mes de 2023 para Hábitat para la Humanidad y el Centro Jubileo se destinó a apoyar el trabajo de Hábitat en Kearney. Mucha gente me habla de su gratitud por el apoyo de St. James. ¡La Navidad es una época maravillosa del año para transmitir esta afirmación y gratitud a todos ustedes! ¡Gracias, gracias, gracias!
El Evangelio de la Misa de la mañana de Navidad es de Juan 1:1-18, aquí están los versículos 3-5: “Por medio de él todas las cosas fueron creadas; sin él, nada de lo creado llegó a existir.En él estaba la vida, y la vida era la luz de la humanidad. Esta luz resplandece en las tinieblas, y las tinieblas no han podido extinguirla.” Que esta vida y luz los llenen a todos durante esta temporada de Navidad y durante el Año Nuevo.
