Catholic Social Teaching

St. James Social Teaching Council Mission Statement

The Catholic Social Teaching Council at St. James is committed to raising the awareness of and understanding of Catholic Social Justice principles; to advocating for those principles; and to putting those principles into action in our family, economic and community life.

St. James Social Teaching Council Values Statement

The Catholic Social Justice Council at St. James exists to aid in actively and consistently promoting Catholic Social Justice teachings in our parish as a central and essential element of Catholic faith. The committee recognizes that God's special love for those who are poor is rooted in both the Hebrew and Christian Scripture. In addition, this committee will train and educate so that it is evident that Catholic Social Teaching is founded on the life and words of Jesus Christ. The committee will focus on Jesus, who came "to bring glad tidings to the poor ... liberty to captives ... recovery of sight to the blind" (Lk 4: 18-19) and who identified himself with "the least of these," the hungry and the stranger (Mt 25:45).

St. James Catholic Social Teaching Council Goals

  1. Education
  2. Advocacy
  3. Action

There are several ways St. James puts our Catholic social teachings into action. For example, the St. James Community Life committee supports monthly Safe Center meals, the Coat & Mitten drive for the Jubilee Center, weekly Jubilee meals during the month of April, monthly nonperishable food drive for the Jubilee Center, Goodfellows Christmas Shoebox Project, Advent Tree and Easter Caring Tree. Parishioners also help with Habitat for Humanity and Mission II Haiti.
