Another Fishing Story

     “Brothers and sisters: Let us give thanks to the Father, who has made you fit to share in the inheritance of the holy ones in light. He delivered us from the power of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. Colossians 1:12-14
     This weekend we celebrate the Solemnity of Christ the King of the Universe. It is the end of the Liturgical year and finish to a year of grace. Most of us are unaware or unfamiliar with a king as ruler. We even see in the media and on streets people protesting saying “No Kings”. But this is a response to local and social unhappiness with government leaders. No names to be mentioned.
     Jesus is a King of a different sort. He is King who rules by love and justice, by kindness and compassion for those who are lowly and abandoned. Jesus’ Kingdom does not hold us back or discriminate, it is welcoming and open to all who accept the truth. Maybe this hints at the core difference in the Kingdom of Jesus. Truth. Many people try and make the truth relative, unique to each individual person. But truth is absolute and definitive, like the Kingdom of Christ the King. Jesus rules by His truth and goodness, but also by His righteousness. This means that He demands that if we want to live in His Kingdom, we follow the truth of the Gospel, we see and respect the dignity of all people. In the Kingdom of Christ, there is no borders, there is no separation of race or color. All are sons and daughters of God, as the second reading reminds us above: “fit to share in the inheritance of the holy ones in light”. In Christ Jesus, we are the heirs, we inherit the Kingdom of heaven. All believers are citizens of Christs Kingdom as they adhere to the absolute Truth in Jesus Christ, His life, death and resurrection for us to inherit eternity.
     Today we celebrate the only King who can make a real difference in our lives. We end the Church year by calling to mind all the eternal king has done for us. And we look to Christ the King of the Universe, to bless and guide the coming days of Advent, leading us to the Birth of the Savior King.

Colosenses1,12-14
    Este fin de semana celebramos la Solemnidad de Cristo Rey del Universo. Es el final del año litúrgico y la conclusión de un año de gracia. La mayoría de nosotros no conocemos o no estamos familiarizados con la figura de un rey como gobernante. Incluso vemos en los medios y en las calles a personas protestando, diciendo “No a los reyes”. Pero esta es una respuesta a la insatisfacción social y local con los líderes del gobierno. No mencionaremos nombres.
    Jesús es un Rey de otra clase. Es un Rey que gobierna con amor y justicia, con bondad y compasión hacia los humildes y abandonados. El Reino de Jesús no nos limita ni discrimina; es acogedor y está abierto a todos los que aceptan la verdad. Tal vez esto nos insinúa la diferencia fundamental en el Reino de Jesús: la Verdad. Muchas personas intentan hacer que la verdad sea relativa, única para cada individuo. Pero la verdad es absoluta y definitiva, como el Reino de Cristo Rey. Jesús gobierna por su verdad y bondad, pero también por su rectitud. Esto significa que Él exige que, si queremos vivir en su Reino, sigamos la verdad del Evangelio y veamos y respetemos la dignidad de todas las personas. En el Reino de Cristo no hay fronteras; no existe la separación por raza o color. Todos somos hijos e hijas de Dios, como nos recuerda la segunda lectura arriba: “dignos de participar en la herencia de los santos en la luz”. En Cristo Jesús somos herederos; heredamos el Reino de los cielos. Todos los creyentes son ciudadanos del Reino de Cristo en la medida en que se adhieren a la Verdad absoluta en Jesucristo, a su vida, muerte y resurrección, por la cual heredamos la eternidad.
     Hoy celebramos al único Rey que puede hacer una verdadera diferencia en nuestras vidas. Terminamos el año litúrgico recordando todo lo que el Rey eterno ha hecho por nosotros. Y miramos a Cristo Rey del Universo para que bendiga y guíe los días venideros del Adviento, conduciéndonos al Nacimiento del Rey Salvador.
