Another Fishing Story

     This week we continue with our 3rd part of the teaching homily series on the Mass. We will look at the Liturgy of the Eucharist, the heart of the Mass and height of our faith as Catholics. For our reflection, I thought it would be nice to mention a few quotes from the Vatican II for a deeper understanding of why we do what we do at the Mass. These three quotes from three different Vatican II documents, speak to the power, effect and minister of the Eucharistic sacrifice.
     “The liturgy is the summit toward which the activity of the Church is directed; at the same time it is the font from which all her power flows. For the aim and object of apostolic works is that all who are made sons of God by faith and baptism should come together to praise God in the midst of His Church, to take part in the sacrifice, and to eat the Lord's supper.” (Sacrosanctum Concilium #127)
     “As often as the sacrifice of the cross in which Christ our Passover was sacrificed, is celebrated on the altar, the work of our redemption is carried on, and, in the sacrament of the eucharistic bread, the unity of all believers who form one body in Christ is both expressed and brought about. All men are called to this union with Christ, who is the light of the world, from whom we go forth, through whom we live, and toward whom our whole life strains. “(Lumen Gentium #3)
     “This pastoral charity flows out in a very special way from the Eucharistic sacrifice. This stands as the root and center of the whole life of a priest. What takes place on the altar of sacrifice, the priestly heart must make his own. This cannot be done unless priests through prayer continue to penetrate more deeply into the mystery of Christ. “ Presbyterorum Ordinis #14)

     Esta semana continuamos con la tercera parte de nuestra serie de homilías de enseñanza sobre la Santa Misa. Reflexionaremos sobre la Liturgia de la Eucaristía, el corazón de la Misa y la cumbre de nuestra fe como católicos. Para nuestra reflexión, pensé que sería bueno mencionar algunas citas del Concilio Vaticano II, para comprender más profundamente por qué hacemos lo que hacemos durante la Misa. Estas tres citas, tomadas de tres documentos diferentes del Concilio Vaticano II, hablan del poder, los efectos y el ministerio del sacrificio eucarístico.
     “La liturgia es la cumbre a la cual tiende la actividad de la Iglesia y, al mismo tiempo, la fuente de donde mana toda su fuerza. Pues los trabajos apostólicos se ordenan a que, una vez hechos hijos de Dios por la fe y el bautismo, todos se reúnan para alabar a Dios en medio de su Iglesia, participen en el sacrificio y coman la cena del Señor”. (Sacrosanctum Concilium, n.º 10)
     “Cuantas veces se celebra en el altar el sacrificio de la cruz, en el que Cristo, nuestra Pascua, fue inmolado, se realiza la obra de nuestra redención. Al mismo tiempo, en el sacramento del pan eucarístico, se representa y se realiza la unidad de los fieles, que constituyen un solo cuerpo en Cristo. Todos los hombres son llamados a esta unión con Cristo, que es la luz del mundo, de quien procedemos, por quien vivimos y hacia quien caminamos”. (Lumen Gentium, n.º 3)
     “Esta caridad pastoral brota principalmente del sacrificio eucarístico, que es, por ello, el centro y raíz de toda la vida del presbítero. Por tanto, el corazón sacerdotal debe hacer suyo lo que se realiza en el altar del sacrificio. Esto no puede lograrse si los sacerdotes no penetran cada vez más profundamente en el misterio de Cristo mediante la oración”. (Presbyterorum Ordinis, n.º 14)
