Fishing in Lent
Every First Sunday of Lent we go with Jesus into the desert. Here with the Lord, we encounter our lowliness, vulnerability and humility. This is meant to connect us with the Sixth Sunday of Lent when we go with Jesus to the cross.
On the Second Sunday of Lent we go with Jesus up to the mountain to be transfigured with him. Here we are lifted up by experiencing the Lord’s glory shining into our lives. This encounter is intended to connect us with the Easter event of the resurrection (this could be considered the Seventh Sunday of Lent as well as the First Sunday of Easter). Sunday I, The desert and testing parallels Sunday VI, The Passion and death of Jesus. Sunday II The Transfiguration, parallels Sunday VII, The Resurrection.
In all three liturgical cycles there is a middle series of Gospels on Sundays III, IV and V. This year, in Cycle B we will be hearing from the Gospel of John.
Sunday III, John 2:13-25, The Cleansing of the Temple: “stop making my Father’s house a marketplace…Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.”
Sunday IV, John 3:14-21 Nicodemus: “Now there was a Pharisee named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews” and we will hear the famous passage from John 3:16, “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life.”
Sunday V, John 12:20-33, The Coming of Jesus’ Hour: “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. Amen, amen, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains just a grain of wheat; but if it dies, it produces much fruit.
These readings will prepare you for Holy Week! I encourage everyone to make the Triduum “Three Days” liturgies a priority on your calendar: March 28-31, 2024.
From The Roman Missal: In the Sacred Triduum, the Church solemnly celebrates the greatest mysteries of our redemption, keeping by means of special celebrations the memorial of her Lord, crucified, buried and risen. The Paschal Fast should also be kept sacred. It is to be celebrated everywhere on the Friday of the Lord’s Passion and, where appropriate, prolonged also through Holy Saturday as a way of coming, with spirit uplifted, to the joys of the Lord’s Resurrection.

Pescando en Cuaresma
Cada Primer Domingo de Cuaresma vamos con Jesús al desierto. Aquí con el Señor encontramos nuestra humildad, vulnerabilidad y humildad. Esto tiene como objetivo conectarnos con el Sexto Domingo de Cuaresma cuando vamos con Jesús a la cruz.
El Segundo Domingo de Cuaresma, subimos con Jesús al monte para transfigurarse con él. Aquí somos elevados al experimentar la gloria del Señor brillando en nuestras vidas. Este encuentro pretende conectarnos con el evento pascual de la resurrección (este podría considerarse el Séptimo Domingo de Cuaresma, así como el Primer Domingo de Pascua). El Domingo I, El desierto y la prueba, es paralelo al Domingo VI, La Pasión y muerte de Jesús. Domingo II La Transfiguración, paralelo al Domingo VII, La Resurrección
En los tres ciclos litúrgicos hay una serie intermedia de Evangelios los domingos III, IV y V. Este año, en el Ciclo B escucharemos el Evangelio de Juan.
Domingo III, Juan 2:13-25, Jesús expulsa del Templo: “no conviertan la casa de mi Padre en un mercado... Destruyan este templo, y yo lo reedificare en tres días.”
Domingo IV, Juan 3:14-21 Nicodemo: “Entre los fariseos había un personaje judío llamado Nicodemo.” y escucharemos el famoso pasaje de Juan 3:16, “Así amo Dios al Mundo! Le dio al Hijo Único, para que quien cree en él no se pierda, sino que tenga vida eterna.”
Domingo V, Juan 12:20-33, La Venida de la Hora de Jesús: “Ha llegado la hora para que sea glorificado el Hijo del Hombre. En verdad, en verdad les digo: si el grano de trigo no cae en la tierra y muere, queda sólo; pero si muere, da mucho fruto.
¡Estas lecturas te prepararán para la Semana Santa! Animo a todos a que hagan de las liturgias del Triduo de los “Tres Días” una prioridad en su calendario: del 28 al 31 de marzo de 2024.
Del Misal Romano: En el Sagrado Triduo, la Iglesia celebra solemnemente los mayores misterios de nuestra redención, guardando mediante celebraciones especiales el memorial de su Señor, crucificado, sepultado y resucitado. El ayuno pascual también debe mantenerse sagrado. Debe celebrarse en todas partes el viernes de la Pasión del Señor y, en su caso, prolongarse también hasta el Sábado Santo, como modo de acercarse, con el espíritu elevado, a los gozos de la Resurrección del Señor.
