Another Fishing Story

     Happy Epiphany! This weekend we celebrate the Epiphany of the Lord, which means His manifestation. The Lord Jesus is made known to every people of every land. The 3 Wise Men or Magi, represent the ends of the earth as they were known at the time of the birth of Jesus. They came to know of His birth by following a star. This was not just any star, but the light of the whole world to see. Even astrologers and scientists attest to a giant star on that night that could be seen from anywhere on earth.
     Have you ever just took the time to stop and look up at the stars? Every now and then I get to tell an actual “Fishing Story” from my time up North ice fishing with priest classmates. Several years ago, I was blessed to take a sabbatical and I spent a month living in the middle of a frozen lake, all alone, just me and Jesus. At night, I was fascinated by the wonder of the stars. Sure, they are always up in the sky, but when I was out in the middle of that lake in Northern Minnesota, because of the lack of city lights, the stars dazzled like I had never seen before. A number of times I caught a magnificent display of the Northen Lights across the fridged skies. I can’t help but think this is what the 3 Wise Men saw. They saw a great display of light, a magnificent wonder and it changed their direction to Jesus.
     This is the same light we see in Jesus. This is the same light shone to us at Christmas and in every Mass we attend in this New Year. This light can change us as well. The Lord wants to show us how great His love is and how magnificently He cares for our every need. All we need to do is follow the light, the star of David, the true light come into the darkness around us. This week I encourage you to be like the 3 Wise Men, or Magi and look up! Look up to the heavens and see what the Lord has in storefor you in Christ Jesus. May God keep our gaze on the heavens and on the true light this New and Blessed Year

Otra Historia de Pesca 

     ¡Feliz Epifanía! Este fin de semana celebramos la Epifanía del Señor, que significa Su manifestación. El Señor Jesús se da a conocer a todos los pueblos de toda la tierra. Los tres Reyes Magos representan los confines de la tierra tal como se conocían en la época del nacimiento de Jesús. Ellos llegaron a conocer Su nacimiento siguiendo una estrella. No era cualquier estrella, sino la luz que todo el mundo podía ver. Incluso los astrólogos y científicos reconocen que hubo una estrella gigante aquella noche que podía verse desde cualquier lugar de la tierra.
     ¿Alguna vez se han tomado el tiempo para detenerse y mirar hacia las estrellas? De vez en cuando, tengo la oportunidad de contar una verdadera “Historia de Pesca” de mi tiempo en el norte, pescando en hielo con compañeros sacerdotes. Hace varios años, tuve la bendición de tomar un sabático y pasé un mes viviendo en medio de un lago congelado, completamente solo, solo yo y Jesús. Por las noches, me fascinaba la maravilla de las estrellas. Claro, siempre están en el cielo, pero cuando estaba en medio de ese lago en el norte de Minnesota, debido a la ausencia de luces de la ciudad, las estrellas brillaban como nunca las había visto antes. Varias veces fui testigo de un magnífico espectáculo de las Auroras Boreales en los cielos helados. No puedo evitar pensar que esto es lo que vieron los tres Reyes Magos. Vieron un gran despliegue de luz, una maravilla magnífica, y eso cambió su dirección hacia Jesús.
     Esta es la misma luz que vemos en Jesús. Esta es la misma luz que nos fue mostrada en Navidad y en cada Misa a la que asistimos en este Nuevo Año. Esta luz también puede cambiarnos. El Señor quiere mostrarnos cuán grande es Su amor y cuán magníficamente cuida de cada una de nuestras necesidades. Todo lo que necesitamos hacer es seguir la luz, la estrella de David, la verdadera luz que vino a iluminar la oscuridad a nuestro alrededor.
     Esta semana los animo a ser como los tres Reyes Magos, o Magos, y ¡mirar hacia arriba! ¡Miren hacia los cielos y vean lo que el Señor tiene preparado para ustedes en Cristo Jesús! Que Dios mantenga nuestra mirada en los cielos y en la verdadera luz en este Año Nuevo y Bendecido.
