"Love Beyond Words" This year’s theme for the observances of National Marriage Week (Feb. 7-14) and World Marriage Day (Feb. 11) offers an opportunity to focus on building a culture of life and love that begins with supporting and promoting marriage and the family. Married couples are invited to recall the promises that they made to each other on their wedding day. This exchange of consent “is the indispensable element that ‘makes the marriage’” (CCC 1626). Couples are invited to meditate on how they live out their marriage promises in their daily lives. This annual observance is also an opportunity for spouses to reflect on how they have either grown together or drifted apart since their wedding day. It can be an occasion to consider anew how they can choose to grow and recommit to loving and honoring their spouse.
I am also aware that observing this day often brings many memories and feelings to people whose marriages have ended through death or separation. Each experience is unique, and the Lord’s mercy is great! To those who experience this form of pain and loss, we offer our compassion and support.
This week’s bulletin insert lists the 52 couples in our parish who are married 50 years or longer and the 23 couples registered at St. James who were married in 2023. I offer my congratulations and blessings to everyone who lives this great sacrament in love and fidelity. Amar más allá de las palabras: "Es el tema de este año para las celebraciones de la Semana Nacional del Matrimonio (7 al 14 de febrero) y el Día Mundial del Matrimonio (11 de febrero) ofrece una oportunidad para centrarse en la construcción de una cultura de vida y amor que comienza con el apoyo y la promoción del matrimonio y la familia. Se invita a las parejas casadas a recorder las promesas que se hicieron el día de su boda. Este intercambio de consentimiento “es el elemento indispensable que 'hace el matrimonio'” (CCC 1626). Se invita a las parejas a meditar sobre cómo viven cumplir sus promesas matrimoniales en su vida diaria. Esta celebración anual es también una oportunidad para que los cónyuges reflexionen sobre cómo han crecido juntos o se han distanciado desde el día de su boda. Puede ser una ocasión para considerar de nuevo cómo pueden elegir crecer y volver a comprometerse a amar y honrar a su cónyuge.
También soy consciente de que observar este día a menudo trae muchos recuerdos y sentimientos a las personas cuyos matrimonios terminaron por muerte o separación. ¡Cada experiencia es única y grande la misericordia del Señor! A quienes experimentan esta forma de dolor y pérdida, les ofrecemos nuestra compasión y apoyo.
