Fishing in Ordinary time
“After John had been arrested, Jesus came to Galilee proclaiming the gospel of God: "This is the time of fulfillment. The kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel." (Mark 1:14)
On most Sundays, in the Lectionary readings, the first reading and Gospel are intentionally paired because of a common theme or experience. This Sunday the reading from Jonah chapter 3 and the Gospel of Mark chapter 1, as with the first reading 1 Samuel 3 and Gospel of John 1:35-42 from last week, are referred to as “Call Narratives.”
A call comes from God/Jesus and people are invited to make a life changing response. There are many other places in the Scripture that we hear “call narratives”. Just like the characters in the story, we are all invited to listen to a call from God/Jesus in our own lives and choose to respond. Though times and circumstances differ, several elements are similar.
First, the divine caller usually demands the person who is called to “move.” There is a “move it or lose it” quality to most calls inviting a significant response. Neither God nor Jesus says, “Stay there! Just keep on doing what you’re doing!” A change in direction is always demanded, either spiritual, physical, emotional, relational or all of these and even more. Responding to a call from God results in experiencing change.
Second, the individual who is called experiences a personal presence (God) and a real person Jesus. When we deal with any personal encounter, there’s always something new to learn about God or Jesus or another person. Nothing stays the same.
Third, whoever is called is now expected to risk his or her security and place their trust in the person doing the calling. Their personal strength and identity shifts from past experiences, places, people and ideas to someone or something completely “other”.
Consider taking time in prayer and reflection with the call/response stories from last Sunday and this Sunday. Imagine that you are in the conversation with Samuel and Eli, with Jonah and the LORD, with Jesus, John the Baptist, Andrew, the unnamed disciple, Peter, James and John.

La mayoría de los domingos, en las lecturas del Leccionario, la primera lectura y el Evangelio se combinan intencionalmente debido a un tema o experiencia común. Este domingo, la lectura de Jonás capítulo 3 y el Evangelio de Marcos capítulo 1, al igual que la primera lectura de 1 Samuel 3 y el Evangelio de Juan 1:35-42 de la semana pasada, se denominan “Narrativas al llamado”.
Un llamado viene de Dios/Jesús y las personas están invitadas a dar una respuesta que cambie sus vidas. Hay muchos otros lugares en las Escrituras que escuchamos “llamar narraciones”. Al igual que los personajes de la historia, todos estamos invitados a escuchar un llamado de Dios/Jesús en nuestras propias vidas y elegir responder. Aunque los tiempos y las circunstancias difieren, varios elementos son similares.
Primero, el llamador divino generalmente exige que la persona llamada “se mueva”. Hay una “cualidad de muévelo o piérdelo" en la mayoría de los llamados que invitan a una respuesta significativa. Ni Dios ni Jesús dicen: “¡Quédense ahí! ¡Sigue haciendo lo que estás haciendo! Siempre se exige un cambio de dirección, ya sea espiritual, física, emocional, relacional o todas estas y aún más. Responder a un llamado de Dios resulta en experimentar un cambio.
En segundo lugar, el individuo que es llamado experimenta una presencia personal (Dios) y una persona real, Jesús. Cuando nos enfrentamos a cualquier encuentro personal, siempre hay algo nuevo que aprender sobre Dios, Jesús o otra persona. Nada permanece igual.
En tercer lugar, ahora se espera que quien sea llamado arriesgue su seguridad y deposite su confianza en la persona que llama. Su fuerza e identidad personal pasan de experiencias, lugares, personas e ideas pasadas a alguien o algo completamente “otro”.
Considere tomarse un tiempo para orar y reflexionar con las historias de llamado/respuesta del domingo pasado y de este domingo. Imagínate que estás en la conversación con Samuel y Elí, con Jonás y el Señor, con Jesús, Juan el Bautista, Andrés, el discípulo anónimo, Pedro, Santiago y Juan.
