Fishing in Ordinary time
Thomas Merton OCSO (1915 - 1968) was a Trappist monk and writer. He wrestled with the Call/Response dynamic in his book, "Thoughts in Solitude":
“MY LORD GOD, I have no idea where I am going. I do not see the road ahead of me. I cannot know for certain where it will end. Nor do I really know myself, and the fact that I think that I am following your will does not mean that I am actually doing so. But I believe that the desire to please you does in fact please you. And I hope I have that desire in all that I am doing. I hope that I will never do anything apart from that desire. And I know that if I do this you will lead me on the right road though I may know nothing about it. Therefore, will I trust you always though I may seem to be lost and in the shadow of death. I will not fear, for you are ever with me, and you will never leave me to face my perils alone.”
Cardinal John Henry Newman (1801-1890) wrote powerfully about this
Call/Response vocational dynamic in his reflection ‘DIVINE PROVIDENCE’:
GOD HAS CREATED ME to do Him some definite service. He has committed some work to me which he has not committed to another. I HAVE MY MISSION; I may never know it in this life, but I shall be told it in the next.
I AM A LINK IN A CHAIN. A bond of connection between persons. He has not created me for naught. I shall do good – I shall do His work. I shall be an angel of peace, a preacher of truth in my own place while not intending it if I do but keep His commandments.
THEREFORE, I WILL TRUST HIM. Whatever I am, I can never be thrown away If I am in sickness, my sickness may serve Him in perplexity, my perplexity may serve Him. If I am in sorrow, my sorrow may serve Him.
HE DOES NOTHING IN VAIN. He knows what He is about. He may take away my friends. He may throw me among strangers. He may make me feel desolate, make my spirits sink, hide my future from me – still HE KNOWS WHAT HE IS ABOUT.

Thomas Merton OCSO (1915 - 1968) fue un monje y escritor trapense. Luchó con la dinámica Llamada/Respuesta en su libro "Pensamientos en soledad":
“DIOS MÍO SEÑOR, no tengo idea de dónde voy. No veo el camino
delante de mí. No puedo saber con certeza dónde terminará. Tampoco me conozco realmente a mí mismo, y el hecho de que crea que estoy siguiendo tu voluntad no significa que en realidad lo esté haciendo. Pero creo que el deseo de complacerte en realidad te complace. Y espero tener ese deseo en todo lo que estoy haciendo. Espero no hacer nunca nada aparte de ese deseo. Y sé que si hago esto me guiarás por el camino correcto, aunque yo no sepa nada al respecto. Por tanto, confiaré siempre en ti, aunque parezca estar perdido y en sombra de muerte. No temeré, porque tú siempre estás conmigo y nunca me dejarás enfrentar mis peligros solo.”

DIOS ME HA CREADO para hacerle algún servicio definido. Me ha encomendado un trabajo que no ha encomendado a otro. TENGO MI MISIÓN; Puede que nunca lo sepa en esta vida, pero me lo dirán en la próxima.
SOY UN ESLABÓN EN UNA CADENA. Un eslabón de conexión entre personas. No me ha creado en vano. Haré el bien, hare Su obra. Seré un ángel de paz, un predicador de la verdad en mi propio lugar, aunque no sea mi intención, si guardo sus mandamientos.
POR LO TANTO, CONFIARÉ EN ÉL. Sea lo que sea, nunca podrá ser desechado. Si estoy enfermo, mi enfermedad te puede server en la perplejidad, mi perplejidad te puede servir. Si estoy triste, mi tristeza te puede servir.
