Another Fishing Story
We have begun Lent and this first Sunday we hear a lot about repentance and making things new. Lent is traditionally a penitential season that reflects the need of every heart to turn to Jesus and allow Him to make new. This means first of all to turn away from sin. This is the ancient definition of repentance is to turn away from sin and to turn towards the Lord. Our Lenten observances and things we “give up” for Lent, help us to focus on this turning towards the Lord our God.
I want to offer a few suggestions for this Lent at St. James. The first is prayer. We all could spend some more time in prayer and even learning to pray better. The Nazareth School of Prayer is a program we are hosting that offers some help in the area of prayer and deepening our sense of the Lord with us in prayer. Myself and Fr. Scott, along with Fr. Anthony and Fr. Lawrence, will be offering Tuesday night Prayer classes for anyone who just wants to learn how to pray better, deeper or closer to Jesus. We will also be offering extra times for confessions each week of Lent every Tuesday and Thursday night from 6-8 PM. Eucharistic Adoration will also extend through the entire night on Wednesdays into Thursday every week in order to allow for quiet time with Jesus in the garden of your hearts.
One last thing we will do as a parish this Lent, is intentionally invite more quiet into our lives by NOT singing a hymn as we recess out of the church. At all Masses, the priest, deacon and servers will leave in silence after the final blessing. Once we have reverenced the altar and leave, the faithful are invited to kneel or sit and spend a moment in silent personal prayer. Our hope is to allow for more time with Jesus in gratitude for all He does for us here at St. James.

Hemos comenzado la Cuaresma y en este primer domingo escuchamos mucho acerca del arrepentimiento y de hacer nuevas todas las cosas. La Cuaresma es tradicionalmente un tiempo penitencial que refleja la necesidad de todo corazón de volverse a Jesús y permitirle que haga nuevas todas las cosas. Esto significa, ante todo, apartarse del pecado. La definición antigua del arrepentimiento es apartarse del pecado y volverse hacia el Señor. Nuestras prácticas cuaresmales y las cosas a las que “renunciamos” durante la Cuaresma nos ayudan a enfocarnos en ese volvernos hacia el Señor, nuestro Dios.
Quiero ofrecer algunas sugerencias para esta Cuaresma en St. James. La primera es la oración. Todos podríamos dedicar más tiempo a la oración e incluso aprender a orar mejor. La Escuela de Oración de Nazaret es un programa que estamos ofreciendo y que brinda ayuda en el ámbito de la oración y en profundizar nuestro sentido de la presencia del Señor con nosotros en la oración. Yo mismo y el Padre Scott, junto con el Padre Anthony y el Padre Lawrence, estaremos ofreciendo clases de oración los martes por la noche para cualquiera que simplemente desee aprender a orar mejor, más profundamente o más cerca de Jesús.
También estaremos ofreciendo horarios adicionales para confesiones cada semana de Cuaresma, todos los martes y jueves por la noche de 6 a 8 p.m. La Adoración Eucarística también se extenderá durante toda la noche los miércoles hasta el jueves cada semana, para permitir un tiempo de silencio con Jesús en el jardín de sus corazones.
Por último, como parroquia, esta Cuaresma haremos un esfuerzo intencional por invitar a más silencio en nuestras vidas al NO cantar un himno al salir de la iglesia. En todas las Misas, el sacerdote, el diácono y los servidores se retirarán en silencio después de la bendición final. Una vez que hayamos reverenciado el altar y nos retiremos, los fieles están invitados a arrodillarse o sentarse y pasar un momento en oración personal y silenciosa. Nuestra esperanza es permitir más tiempo con Jesús en gratitud por todo lo que Él hace por nosotros aquí en St. James.
