Another Fishing Story

     This week we will continue our 4-week homily series on the Mass. The Liturgy of the Word is the second part we will explore and learn about this weekend. The Liturgy of the Word has great importance in the Mass and draws the faithful into the mystery of salvation. From the Old Testament reading (first reading) which tells of how God desires to save His people, through the Psalm Response and the New Testament (non-gospel) reading, we can see clearly how God has tried to capture the faithful in His love and mercy. The four Gospels tell the story or narrative of how that came about in Jesus Christ.
     The homily (sermon) is meant to make a connection for the faithful. Often times we don’t understand a reading or what it means for us in the modern-day church. The priest or deacon preacher, makes this connection with examples and reflection on the teachings and traditions of the church over two-thousand years. After the homily, we profess the Creed, an act of assenting to the beliefs handed down to us over those same two-thousand plus years. Then we offer the Prayers of the Faithful as a sign of uniting in faith and prayer, interceding for the needs of the local church, the universal church and the world, concluding always with a prayer for the dead.
     This week all of the priests of the Diocese of Grand Island will be on our annual retreat in Schuyler, Nebraska. I ask you to pray for our priests and Bishop as we spend these days growing closer to the Lord in our own prayer and fraternity. Please know that Fr. Anthony and myself will be offering prayers for all of you as well.

Otra historia de pesca

     Esta semana continuaremos con nuestra serie de homilías de cuatro semanas sobre la Misa. Este fin de semana exploraremos y aprenderemos sobre la segunda parte: la Liturgia de la Palabra. La Liturgia de la Palabra tiene una gran importancia dentro de la Misa y nos introduce, como fieles, en el misterio de la salvación. Desde la lectura del Antiguo Testamento (primera lectura), que nos habla de cómo Dios desea salvar a su pueblo, pasando por el Salmo Responsorial y la lectura del Nuevo Testamento (que no es del Evangelio), podemos ver claramente cómo Dios ha buscado atraer a los fieles hacia su amor y misericordia. Los cuatro Evangelios nos cuentan la historia o el relato de cómo esto llegó a realizarse en Jesucristo.
     La homilía (sermón) tiene como propósito ayudar a los fieles a establecer una conexión con la Palabra de Dios. Muchas veces no comprendemos una lectura o lo que significa para nosotros en la Iglesia de hoy. El sacerdote o diácono que predica busca hacer esa conexión mediante ejemplos y reflexiones sobre las enseñanzas y tradiciones de la Iglesia a lo largo de más de dos mil años. Después de la homilía, profesamos el Credo, un acto mediante el cual asentimos a las creencias que nos han sido transmitidas a lo largo de esos mismos más de dos mil años. Luego ofrecemos las Oraciones de los Fieles como signo de nuestra unidad en la fe y en la oración, intercediendo por las necesidades de la Iglesia local, de la Iglesia universal y del mundo, concluyendo siempre con una oración por los difuntos.
     Esta semana, todos los sacerdotes de la Diócesis de Grand Island estaremos en nuestro retiro anual en Schuyler, Nebraska. Les pido que oren por nuestros sacerdotes y por nuestro Obispo mientras pasamos estos días acercándonos más al Señor mediante nuestra propia oración y fraternidad. Sepan que el Padre Anthony y yo también estaremos ofreciendo oraciones por todos ustedes.
