Another Fishing Story
“Brothers and sisters: Faith is the realization of what is hoped for and evidence of things not seen. (Hebrews 11:1)
Our second reading this weekend is the traditional definition of Faith. When someone asks what faith is though, we would probably not just quote Hebrews. Faith also has a personal dimension to it. Usually when I am teaching the basics of the Catholic faith, I like to tell people that it is more of a “both – and” response. What do I mean by this?
Hebrews says that faith is the realization of what is hope for. As Catholic Christians we all have a common hope, which is eternal life or heaven as we affectionately call it. This is our destiny, where we were made for and “whom” we are made for, that is God. But God has also allowed us to all be created unique and individual, meaning we also have personal hopes and dreams. These are also made real by our faith. God notices our faith in Him and our turning to Him in our desires and longings, so long as they are not sinful, and He responds to us in offering all we need, all we hope for.
Hebrews also says that faith is evidence of things not see. We cannot seen God, but faith allows us to know with certainty that He exists and really does care about us. We cannot see true peace, but faith allows Peace to be possible in God’s grace. We cannot see the fact that the ordinary bread and wine offered at Mass become the real Body and Blood of Jesus, but faith tells us that Christ is truly present, as He tells us in John chapter 6. So many important parts of our lives like joy, peace, love, and compassion are not always necessarily seen, but they are truly present when we believe, when faith is allowed to seek them out.
It might be good for all of us to “take this fishing” and ponder these short verses from the Letter to the Hebrews. Ask yourselves, “What do I hope for?” and “What do I not see, but believe it is present and real by faith” May God bless us all with a deeper faith and a hope in what is yet to come.

“Hermanos y hermanas: La fe es la certeza de lo que se espera y la evidencia de lo que no se ve.” (Hebreos 11,1)
Nuestra segunda lectura de este fin de semana es la definición tradicional de la fe. Sin embargo, cuando alguien pregunta qué es la fe, probablemente no solo citaríamos Hebreos. La fe también tiene una dimensión personal. Normalmente, cuando enseño los fundamentos de la fe católica, me gusta decirle a la gente que es más bien una respuesta de “ambas cosas – y”. ¿Qué quiero decir con esto?
Hebreos dice que la fe es la realización de lo que se espera. Como cristianos católicos, todos compartimos una esperanza común, que es la vida eterna, o el cielo, como cariñosamente lo llamamos. Este es nuestro destino, para lo cual fuimos creados y para “quién” fuimos creados: Dios. Pero Dios también ha permitido que todos seamos creados de forma única e individual, lo que significa que también tenemos esperanzas y sueños personales. Estos también se hacen realidad por medio de nuestra fe. Dios nota nuestra fe en Él y nuestro volvernos a Él en nuestros deseos y anhelos, siempre que no sean pecaminosos, y Él responde ofreciéndonos todo lo que necesitamos, todo lo que esperamos.
Hebreos también dice que la fe es la evidencia de lo que no se ve. No podemos ver a Dios, pero la fe nos permite saber con certeza que Él existe y realmente se preocupa por nosotros. No podemos ver la verdadera paz, pero la fe hace posible la paz en la gracia de Dios. No podemos ver el hecho de que el pan y el vino ordinarios ofrecidos en la Misa se convierten en el verdadero Cuerpo y Sangre de Jesús, pero la fe nos dice que Cristo está verdaderamente presente, como Él mismo nos dice en el capítulo 6 del Evangelio de San Juan. Muchas partes importantes de nuestra vida como la alegría, la paz, el amor, y la compasión, no siempre se ven necesariamente, pero están verdaderamente presentes cuando creemos, cuando se permite a la fe buscarlas.
Sería bueno que todos nosotros “nos lleváramos esto a pescar” y reflexionáramos sobre estos breves versículos de la Carta a los Hebreos. Pregúntense: “¿Qué es lo que espero?” y “¿Qué es lo que no veo, pero creo que está presente y es real por medio de la fe?” Que Dios nos bendiga a todos con una fe más profunda y una esperanza en lo que está por venir.
