Fishing with St. James

I have been blessed to be able to serve here for sixteen years watching our parish community grow in age, wisdom and grace! I have been invited into the joyful, sorrowful and glorious mysteries of people’s lives. I have been welcomed as a guest into the house of the church and into so many individual homes. While I have been here, I celebrated 497 Baptisms, 1,095 First Communions, 145 Confirmations (with 2 Bishops), 207 Weddings and 277 Funerals. I leave with profound gratitude, palpable grief and abundant grace.
   There is a story told about St. Pope John XXIII in which he was asked how many people work in the Vatican. Pope John answered, “About half of them.” The corollary at St. James is that when people ask, “How many people do you pay at St. James?”, I say about half of them. St. James is the beneficiary of committed disciples who live out generous stewardship by giving their time, talent and treasure; I have also been amazed at the stewardship and generosity of the people of this community. I see so many people involved in service through organizations, families and individuals reaching out to others. 
   I am impressed with the diversity of our parish and community, especially the positive presence and resilience of minority groups, including many families of Hispanic, Palestinian and Vietnamese descent. We have Mass in Spanish and in Vietnamese once a month. 
   The Parish Council presented me with a toy pedal tractor to honor the work we have done together to till the soil, plant the seed, tend the plant and celebrate the harvest together. A plaque on the tractor reads: “the seed sown on rich soil is the one hears the word and understands it, who indeed bears fruit and yields a hundred or sixty or thirtyfold.’ (Matthew 13:23) and Fr. Joe has yielded much fruit in our parish.” I have been blessed 100, 60 and 30-fold in my time here and I will take that blessing with me wherever I go.
    In the Rite of Baptism, after the baptismal promises, the priest says the following phrase: “This is our faith.  This is the faith of the Church.  We are proud to profess it in Christ Jesus our Lord.”  I want to leave by saying how much I appreciate St. James Parish and the local communities; I know the “Kingdom of God is HERE” in our midst and among us.  The early witnesses to Jesus’ appearance after the resurrection proclaimed, “I have seen the Lord.”  As I leave, I will proclaim in thought, word and deed that I too have experienced the “Risen One” in this community of believers and “I have seen the Lord” here.

Pescando con St. James

     He tenido la bendición de servir aquí durante dieciséis años, viendo crecer a nuestra comunidad parroquial en edad, sabiduría y gracia. He sido invitado a los misterios gozosos, dolorosos y gloriosos de la vida de las personas. He sido recibido como huésped en la casa de la iglesia y en tantos hogares. Durante mi estancia aquí, celebré 497 bautismos, 1095 primeras comuniones, 145 confirmaciones (con dos obispos), 207 bodas y 277 funerales. Me voy con profunda gratitud, un dolor palpable y abundante gracia.
     Se cuenta una historia sobre el Papa Juan XXIII, en la que le preguntaron cuántas personas trabajan en el Vaticano. El Papa Juan respondió: "Aproximadamente la mitad". La consecuencia en St. James es que, cuando la gente pregunta: "¿A cuántas personas pagan en St. James?", respondo que aproximadamente la mitad. St. James se beneficia de discípulos comprometidos que viven una generosa administración al dar su tiempo, talento y dinero. También me ha sorprendido la administración y la generosidad de la gente de esta comunidad. Veo a tanta gente involucrada en el servicio a través de organizaciones, familias e individuos que se unen a los demás.
     Me impresiona la diversidad de nuestra parroquia y comunidad, especialmente la presencia positiva y la resiliencia de los grupos minoritarios, incluyendo muchas familias de ascendencia hispana, palestina y vietnamita. Celebramos misa en español y vietnamita una vez al mes.
     El Consejo Parroquial me regaló un tractor de pedales de juguete para honrar el trabajo que hemos realizado juntos: labrar la tierra, plantar la semilla, cuidar las plantas y celebrar juntos la cosecha. Una placa en el tractor dice: «La semilla sembrada en tierra fértil es la de aquel que oye la palabra y la entiende; este sí da fruto y produce al ciento, al sesenta y al treinta por uno» (Mateo 13:23). Y el Padre Joe ha dado mucho fruto en nuestra parroquia. He sido bendecido cien, sesenta y treinta veces más durante mi tiempo aquí y llevaré esa bendición conmigo a dondequiera que vaya.
     En el Rito del Bautismo, después de las promesas bautismales, el sacerdote dice la siguiente frase: «Esta es nuestra fe. Esta es la fe de la Iglesia. Nos enorgullece profesarla en Cristo Jesús, nuestro Señor». Quiero despedirme expresando mi profundo aprecio por la Parroquia de St. James y las comunidades locales; sé que el «Reino de Dios está AQUÍ» en medio de nosotros y entre nosotros. Los primeros testigos de la aparición de Jesús después de la resurrección proclamaron: «He visto al Señor». Al partir, proclamaré con pensamiento, palabra y obra que yo también he experimentado al «Resucitado» en esta comunidad de creyentes y que «he visto al Señor» aquí.
