Another Fishing Story
Happy Feast of St James!
One of my favorite stories or legends about St James is when his decapitated body floated from Judea across the Mediterranean Sea and washed ashore in Galicia at Padrón, Spain. The boat was miraculously carved from marble, and the mooring stone where it docked is still revered today. For many years, it is believed that St James was buried under the church of his namesake “Santiago de Compostela” in Spain. This has been a popular destination for pilgrims who desire to walk the “Camino” or the way of St James.
We have a different “Camino” here at St James in Kearney, but the blessings and the “way” that our patron has set for us is the same. We are followers of Jesus Christ. We are disciples learning and growing together as a community. We are fishermen casting our nets far and wide in charity and unity as we strive to serve the Lord in others. We walk this “Camino” together and we celebrate the Lords goodness to us. We are blessed to have such a faith-filled community and brothers and sisters who desire to boldly live our faith together, when at times the world around us seems to contradict what we are about.
Today, we celebrate St James and we celebrate Jesus in us and with us. As we celebrate, we pray that St James continue his intercession for us and all who are in need in our community. We pray for others to join us in this vibrant Catholic parish that is full of the life of Jesus Christ and guided by the light of the Holy Spirit. Please join me in praying this ancient St James prayer with hearts full of gratitude.
“O Glorious St. James, because of your fervor and generosity, Jesus chose you to witness His glory on the Mount and His agony in the garden. Obtain for us strength and consolation in the upending struggles of this life. Help us to follow Christ constantly and generously, to be victors overall our difficulties, and to receive the crown of glory in heaven. Amen.”

¡Feliz Fiesta de Santiago Apóstol!
Una de mis historias o leyendas favoritas sobre Santiago Apóstol es la que cuenta que, después de su decapitación, su cuerpo flotó desde Judea a través del mar Mediterráneo hasta llegar a las costas de Galicia, en Padrón, España. La embarcación estaba milagrosamente tallada en mármol, y la piedra de amarre donde atracó sigue siendo venerada hasta el día de hoy. Durante muchos años, se ha creído que Santiago fue sepultado bajo la iglesia que lleva su nombre, la Catedral de Santiago de Compostela, en España. Este lugar ha sido un destino muy querido por los peregrinos que desean recorrer el Camino de Santiago.
Aquí, en la parroquia de Santiago en Kearney, tenemos un “Camino” diferente, pero las bendiciones y el “camino” que nuestro santo patrono nos ha señalado son los mismos. Somos seguidores de Jesucristo. Somos discípulos que aprendemos y crecemos juntos como comunidad. Somos pescadores que lanzamos nuestras redes a lo largo y ancho con caridad y unidad, esforzándonos por servir al Señor en nuestros hermanos. Caminamos este “Camino” juntos y celebramos la bondad del Señor para con nosotros. Somos bendecidos al contar con una comunidad llena de fe y con hermanos y hermanas que desean vivir nuestra fe con valentía, aun cuando, en ocasiones, el mundo que nos rodea parece contradecir aquello en lo que creemos.
Hoy celebramos a Santiago Apóstol y celebramos a Jesús presente en nosotros y con nosotros. Al celebrar esta fiesta, pedimos que Santiago continúe intercediendo por nosotros y por todos los que tienen alguna necesidad en nuestra comunidad. Oramos para que otros se unan a esta vibrante parroquia católica, llena de la vida de Jesucristo y guiada por la luz del Espíritu Santo. Los invito a unirse a mí para rezar esta antigua oración a Santiago con el corazón lleno de gratitud.
“Oh glorioso Santiago Apóstol, por tu fervor y generosidad, Jesús te eligió para ser testigo de su gloria en el monte y de su agonía en el huerto. Alcánzanos fortaleza y consuelo en las luchas y pruebas de esta vida. Ayúdanos a seguir a Cristo con fidelidad y generosidad, a vencer todas nuestras dificultades y a recibir la corona de gloria en el cielo. Amén.”
