Another Fishing Story
“Brothers and sisters: The cup of blessing that we bless, is it not a participation in the blood of Christ? The bread that we break, is it not a participation in the body of Christ? Because the loaf of bread is one, we, though many, are one body, for we all partake of the one loaf.” (1 Cor 10:15-16)
This weekend we celebrate the Solemnity of Corpus Christi, the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ. It is a feast to remind us of the power of the Eucharist and how much we need Jesus in our lives. It is the greatest gift the Lord could have ever left us. I always think of one of the lines from the prayers a priest prays in the Liturgy and from St. Paul’s letter to the Colossians 1:24 that states, “I now rejoice in my sufferings for you, and fill up that which is lacking of the afflictions of Christ in my flesh, for His body’s sake, which is the church”. What is lacking in the sufferings of Christ? Was not the sacrifice of the cross and all Christ went through enough, sufficient? Certainly, it was a perfect sacrifice on His part and for all humanity. But the lacking in this sacrifice is our participation in the suffering.
As the second reading for this weekend reminds us, we participate in the suffering of Christ, His blood and His Body, when we come to Mass and ACTIVELY participate in the Eucharist. The Solemnity of Corpus Christi reminds us of our participation and that the Eucharist, the Body and Blood of Christ make us one with Him and one another. It is sad that, for many Catholics, the need to be at Sunday Eucharist is not a priority but a convenience at times. Recent studies have shown that many Catholics, well over 60 percent, do not even believe in the real presence of Jesus in the Eucharist. We celebrate this second Sunday after Pentecost every year since 1264 to remind everyone that Jesus is truly and really present in the Most Holy Body and Blood of the Eucharistic celebration.
For many years now, a central part of the Solemn celebration, has been to process through the streets and neighborhoods with the Eucharist to consecrate and celebrate Christ present with us and in us. This year, we will have a solemn procession at St. James Church after the 12:30 Pm Spanish Mass, beginning at 1:30. We will process around the church and Kearney Catholic and celebrate our Lord present here and our belief in the power of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ in the Eucharist. All are encouraged and welcome to join us in showing the world what we believe to be true and sacred in the Mass. The procession will conclude in the church with Benediction before Fr. Arts 50th Anniversary celebration.

“Hermanos y hermanas: La copa de bendición que bendecimos, ¿no es acaso participación en la sangre de Cristo? Y el pan que partimos, ¿no es participación en el cuerpo de Cristo? Porque el pan es uno, nosotros, aunque somos muchos, formamos un solo cuerpo, pues todos participamos de ese único pan.” (1 Cor 10, 16-17)
Este fin de semana celebramos la Solemnidad del Corpus Christi, el Santísimo Cuerpo y Sangre de Cristo. Es una fiesta que nos recuerda el poder de la Eucaristía y cuánto necesitamos a Jesús en nuestras vidas. Es el regalo más grande que el Señor pudo habernos dejado. Siempre pienso en una de las frases de las oraciones que un sacerdote reza en la Liturgia y en la carta de San Pablo a los Colosenses 1,24, donde dice: “Ahora me alegro de mis sufrimientos por ustedes, y completo en mi carne lo que falta a las tribulaciones de Cristo, por su cuerpo, que es la Iglesia”. ¿Qué es lo que falta en los sufrimientos de Cristo? ¿Acaso no fue suficiente el sacrificio de la cruz y todo lo que Cristo padeció? Ciertamente, fue un sacrificio perfecto por su parte y para toda la humanidad. Pero lo que falta en este sacrificio es nuestra participación en el sufrimiento.
Como nos recuerda la segunda lectura de este fin de semana, participamos en el sufrimiento de Cristo, en su Sangre y en su Cuerpo, cuando venimos a la Misa y participamos activamente en la Eucaristía. La Solemnidad del Corpus Christi nos recuerda nuestra participación y que la Eucaristía, el Cuerpo y la Sangre de Cristo, nos hacen uno con Él y unos con otros.
Es triste que, para muchos católicos, la necesidad de asistir a la Eucaristía dominical no sea una prioridad, sino algo que se hace solo cuando resulta conveniente. Estudios recientes han demostrado que muchos católicos, más del 60 por ciento, ni siquiera creen en la presencia real de Jesús en la Eucaristía. Celebramos este segundo domingo después de Pentecostés cada año desde 1264 para recordar a todos que Jesús está verdadera y realmente presente en el Santísimo Cuerpo y Sangre de la celebración eucarística.
Desde hace muchos años, una parte central de esta celebración solemne ha sido realizar una procesión por las calles y vecindarios con la Eucaristía para consagrar y celebrar a Cristo presente con nosotros y en nosotros. Este año tendremos una procesión solemne en la Iglesia de Santiago (St. James) después de la Misa en español de las 12:30 p. m., comenzando a la 1:30 p. m. Recorreremos los alrededores de la iglesia y de Kearney Catholic para celebrar a nuestro Señor presente aquí y nuestra fe en el poder del Santísimo Cuerpo y Sangre de Cristo en la Eucaristía. Todos están invitados y son bienvenidos a unirse a nosotros para mostrar al mundo aquello que creemos verdadero y sagrado en la Misa. La procesión concluirá en la iglesia con la Bendición con el Santísimo antes de la celebración del 50.º aniversario sacerdotal del Padre Arte.
