Another Fishing Story
We are getting closer by the day to our Holy Triduum celebration which leads us to Easter. This truly is a sacred and holy time filled with great mystery and thousands of years of tradition. This next week all of the preparations will begin with our annual Chrism Mass in North Platte. All of the clergy will attend and renew priestly promises, as well as receive the newly blessed oils from that Mass. Our own Fr. Art will be honored this year at the Chrism Mass dinner for 50 Years of priestly service. Thank you, Fr. Art, for your servant heart and priestly presence here with us at St. James.
After the Chrism Mass, we return for Holy week starting with Palm Sunday. Then on Holy Thursday we will receive the Holy Oils and celebrate the Lords Supper. I want to call attention to a detail that will look different this year. According to the Roman Missal and in conformity with what the Catholic Church envisions for this Holy night, for the foot washing ceremony, I will wash the feet of 12 individuals. Men and women, children and elders’ feet will be washed. The number 12, most powerfully symbolizes the 12 apostles whom Jesus washed on the night before he died. I am aware of the long local custom of many feet being washed and families having the opportunity to participate. I simply want to express the beauty of what Jesus offered that night, and conform to what the Catholic Church asks. As pastor, this is a very powerful night, expressing my love for you, symbolized by the 12 chosen to represent you. On this night, I am reminded that I am called to serve, to be an image of Christ in the world. Christ who serves from His heart to love.
The invitation then, is the same as Jesus’ invitation. “So, I have done for you, now go and do for others”. After the Holy Thursday Mass and foot washing of the 12, you are invited to go home and do likewise. To go out and serve in love for others. I believe this gesture is memorialized best when we follow the example of Christ himself.

Nos estamos acercando cada día más a nuestra celebración del Santo Triduo, que nos conduce a la Pascua. Este es verdaderamente un tiempo sagrado y santo, lleno de gran misterio y de miles de años de tradición. La próxima semana comenzarán todas las preparaciones con nuestra Misa Crismal anual en North Platte. Todo el clero asistirá y renovará sus promesas sacerdotales, además de recibir los óleos recién bendecidos en esa Misa. Nuestro propio P. Art será honrado este año en la cena de la Misa Crismal por sus 50 años de servicio sacerdotal. Después de la Misa Crismal, regresamos para la Semana Santa comenzando con el Domingo de Ramos. Luego, el Jueves Santo recibiremos los Santos Óleos y celebraremos la Cena del Señor. Como pastor, esta es una noche muy poderosa, en la que expreso mi amor por ustedes, simbolizado por los 12 elegidos para representarlos. En esta noche, se me recuerda que estoy llamado a servir, a ser imagen de Cristo en el mundo: Cristo que sirve desde su corazón para amar.
La invitación, entonces, es la misma que la de Jesús: «Así como yo he hecho con ustedes, vayan y hagan lo mismo por los demás». Después de la Misa del Jueves Santo y del lavatorio de los pies de los 12, están invitados a ir a casa y hacer lo mismo: salir y servir con amor a los demás. Creo que este gesto se recuerda mejor cuando seguimos el ejemplo de Cristo mismo.
