Parish Committees

Parish Council

Members represent the parishioners as an advisory committee to the Pastor in all spiritual and secular affairs of St. James Parish. The Council is composed of nine members each serving a three-year term but no more than two consecutive terms. Additional members include the Pastor, a Parish trustee(s), and designated office staff. Members also serve as liaisons of other parish committees to the Parish Council. The Council meets on the third Thursday of each month. Members are selected by lot from names advanced by the nomination process.

Finance Committee
Members serve to advise the Pastor and Parish Council in all the financial matters of the parish. This includes monthly review of the financial report and financial status, preparation of an annual budget and annual financial report to the parish, overseeing parish investments and liabilities, and direct means of raising revenue for the parish. The Finance Committee is composed of six members each serving a three-year term but no more than two consecutive terms. Additional members include the Pastor, a Parish trustee(s) and designated office staff. Members are approved by the Pastor. The Committee meets on the third Tuesday of each month.

Buildings and Grounds
Members meet to offer directives as well as talents to maintain and improve the physical condition, safety and operation of the parish facilities and infrastructure. This includes cleanup of the grounds along with trimming of the landscaping. Members help to keep the landscape healthy. Some physical labor is needed. Experience in plant care is helpful but not necessary.

Members have also assisted with interior care. Helping with periodic cleaning efforts. The Liturgical Art & Environment group assists in recommendations regarding placement of pictures and other artwork to enhance the beauty of the Church and enrich the worship environment.

Catholic Social Teachings

The Catholic Social Teaching Committee of St. James is committed to raising the awareness of and understanding of Catholic Social Justice principles; to advocating for those principles; and to putting those principles into action in our family, economic and community life.

Communications Committee

Members plan and provide talents to improve and maintain areas of communication. It is essential to the vitality of the Parish that adequate information be disseminated to all parishioners. This includes electronic media such as the church website and social media. The Communications Committee continually updates the website to keep information current and relevant. Historical information, recent and future events are also posted on the website. The bulletin, bulletin inserts and lay ministry schedules are uploaded weekly. The St. James Facebook page is continually updated to keep its followers informed of the current happenings and future events of the parish.

Community Life

The Community Life Committee, with the help of the entire parish, supports St. James' outreach into our church community as well as into the community of Kearney. This committee supports and/or provides the following services: Monthly meals for the Kearney SAFE Center; A coat and mitten drive each October for the Kearney Jubilee Center; Weekly meals during the month of March/April for the Jubilee Center; Monthly non-perishable food drives for the Jubilee Center; The Goodfellows Christmas Shoebox project; Advent and Easter Caring Tree projects for parish shut-ins; Drivers for Meals On Wheels each Thursday; Sponsors the Cake-Walk at the annual St. James OKTOBERFEST celebration.

Faith Formation Committee

Members assist the director of the various aspects of Religious Education. On occasion committee members are asked to help with sacramental celebrations. The focus is to enhance the Religious Education Program for the children of St. James Parish Pre-Kindergarten-5th grade.

Grief Ministry

Members support those experiencing grief with prayer, compassion, understanding and care. The committee receives information regarding those who have died and sends sympathy cards, offers mass intentions, and makes comforting information available to the grieving families. A support group is also available and the committee is responsible for the Mass of Remembering every November.

KCHS School Board

There will be two members of the parish who will represent the parish on the board. The Parish Council and Finance Committees will be kept abreast of activities at the school by liaison report and review of the school board minutes.

Liturgy Committee

Members assist in the planning, organizing, and decorating for liturgies for each season and special occasions according to liturgical documents and local tradition. Additionally assists in training liturgical ministers and distributing the minister schedules on a weekly basis.

Liturgical Art & Environment
Members assist in evaluation of various forms and placement of artwork for the church as a whole to enhance the worship experience.

Oktoberfest Committee

Members plan, organize and oversee the annual fall “fundraiser/fun raiser”. This committee has four subcommittees: (1) dinner, (2) carnival-bake sale-bingo, (3) prize drawing and silent auction, (4) publicity.

Social Committee

The Social Committee promotes and supports our St. James gatherings and seeks
to build a strong faith community within our parish. This committee organizes and sponsors social activities for the parish community. Examples include: Hosting receptions for RCIA/RICA, First Communion and Confirmation; Serving “Donuts and Dough” one Sunday every month; Sponsoring a Soup Supper in January; Organizing a BBQ in July for the Feast of St. James; Decorating the tables and serving at our annual OKTOBERFEST celebration; Planning other parish social events such as: Jubilees, Welcomes and Farewells.

Stewardship Committee
The Stewardship Committee seeks to promote parishioner sharing of time, talent and treasure. This by educating the parishioners along with spearheading the annual Stewardship Renewal and directing the results of the Renewal to the appropriate committees.

Welcome Committee
Member(s) contact all newly registered parishioners welcoming them into the parish, acquainting them with the parish and inviting them to become involved in parish activities, events and projects. A welcoming packet is given. Involved in planning future welcoming events and review of new registration activity.

Projects include: stuffing inserts in the bulletin, answering phones, helping with large mailings.

   Weekly BulletinDonate

St. James will accept donations for area flood relief.  You can make a donation in the collection or at the office. We will distribute all donations to local organizations and individuals effected by the flood in our area. A second collection will be taken the weekend of August 3-4.

Some other organizations where you can make donations: The Jubilee Center, Gibbon Area Flood relief, Gibbon Fire Department, The Kearney Community Foundation, Hot Meals USA, The Red Cross, and The Salvation Army.
