Another Fishing Story

“You are "a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people of his own, so that you may announce the praises" of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.” (1 Peter 2:9)
Do you know and believe you have been chosen? Do you have a sense of being called by name? This has always been a question for every believer who hears the voice of Jesus and responds. I remember when I was a little boy, when playing games with my friends on the playground, we would choose our teams. If I was not the captain, I wanted to be chosen first or second. This meant that I was good and wanted. The reality was that, I was not always chosen foist, in fact I was more often chosen last, or not at all. I remember this hurt my feelings and left a lasting scar in my memory and on my heart.
Saint Peter reminds us that God has chosen us. We are always chosen and wanted with God the Father. Jesus wants and needs us on His team, in His church. It wasn’t until later in life that I realized how deeply those scars of my childhood had impacted me. The evil ones used these scars and memories to hold me back, to keep me from seeing my true worth and my needs. We all want to be chosen and wanted and needed. But first and foremost, we need to see ourselves as chosen and wanted by God. It makes no difference if others do not choose me, but it makes all the difference in the world if I know and believe that I have a God and Father, a Lord and Savior who truly and personally wants me, choses me and loves me. That sort of true understanding of my worth and identity in Christ, changes everything and encourages me to see myself as good and valuable. This is true for all of us. I think we have a real woundedness in our world that is primarily a wound of feeling wanted and chosen. We have a desire to be loved and needed and cherished, but we seek it in many worldly passions and endeavors.
The truth from this second reading from St. Peter is this; you are loved! You have been chosen! You are good and worthy! You are a beloved son and daughter! You are worth Jesus dying for! You are perfect and beautiful just as you are, as God created you! This my brothers and sisters, makes all the difference in the world. Live by this truth, and you will always find your heart’s desire in Jesus Christ.

(1 Pedro 2:9)
¡Has sido elegido! ¡Eres bueno y digno!
