All Are Welcome

After more than 150 years in Kearney, the parish of St. James has a rich history as a community of Catholic worship and an established legacy of service to the people of Kearney and the surrounding areas.

HOLY OILS FOR THE HOLY PEOPLE AT ST. JAMES

In our ancient liturgical traditions, the Chrism Mass was celebrated on Holy Thursday, however when it is difficult for people and clergy to gather with the Bishop on this day, the Chrism Mass may be anticipated on another day near to Easter. The Entrance Antiphon celebrates the priesthood that we all participate in at our baptismal anointing with Holy Chrism, as priests, prophets and kings: “Jesus Christ has made us into a kingdom, priests for his God and Father. To him be glory and power for ever and ever. Amen.” Revelation 1:6

Our Diocesan Chrism Mass will be held on Monday, March 18 at St. Patrick Church in North Platte. At this Mass, Bishop Hanefeldt will bless the Holy Oils that will be processed in at the beginning of our Holy Thursday Mass. The Holy Oils will remain in the sanctuary during the Easter Season and then be placed in the Ambry by the Baptismal Font. The Oil of Catechumens (OS from the Latin Oleum Sanctum) is used for adult catechumens and infants, the Oil of the Sick (OI from the Latin Oelum Infirmorum) is for anointing the sick and infirm, and the Sacred Chrism (SC from the Latin Sacrum Chrisma), is for the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, the Ordination of Priests and for the consecration of a new Altar. The Sacred Chrism is infused with balsam which gives it the scent of a perfume. This is a sensual representation of St. Paul’s message in 2 Corinthians 2:15, “For we are the aroma of Christ for God among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing.

The Chrism Mass in our diocese is also a celebration of special jubilee year anniversaries of ordained priests. The West Nebraska Catholic published brief bios of the seven jubilarians this year. Though he wasn’t noted for a special jubilee year, this is the 71st year of priesthood for Fr. Tom Mullowney who was a member of St. James Parish when he started seminary and now lives at Mount Carmel. I also want to highlight Fr. Tom Ryan who was baptized at St. James and attended St. James School. Fr. Tom was ordained 60 years ago with Fr. Jim Janovec on May 21, 1964. Bishop Joseph G. Hanefeldt and I are the youngest of the jubilarians at a mere 40 years since ordination.

Our Catholic Community of Kearney Communal Reconciliation Service is this Sunday at 6 pm at Prince of Peace. In preparation for the Easter Season, I encourage you to experience the grace and forgiveness available in the Sacrament of Penance this Sunday and/or during our regular confession times every Saturday from 3:30 to 4:30 pm.

SANTOS OLEOS PARA LAS PERSPMAS SANTAS DE
ST. JAMES
