Fishing with St. James

Sunday, May 5, 2024

I will try to sum up today’s three readings and psalm in these four sentences: 1. You are filled with the Holy Spirit! 2. You are loved! 3. You are my friends! Psalm Response: The Lord has revealed to the nations his saving power!

When asked to describe the love to which believers are called, St. Augustine, bishop of Hippo, replied: “It has the hands to help others. It has the feet to hasten to the poor and needy. It has eyes to see misery and want. It has the ears to hear the sighs and sorrow of others. That is what love looks like.”

Early Christian tradition identifies the First Letter of John as a letter written by John the Apostle sometime after the Gospel was written at the end of the first Christian century. When the persecution of believers under the Roman emperor Domitian was most intense, the affirmation offered in this letter would have been a source of hope and strength. For all who continue to suffer for the sake of their faith, John’s Gospel and three letters continues to encourage us today.

Here is today’s second reading from 1 John 4:7-10: Beloved, let us love one another, because love is of God; everyone who loves is begotten by God and knows God. Whoever is without love does not know God, for God is love. In this way the love of God was revealed to us: God sent his only Son into the world so that we might have life through him. In this is love: not that we have loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as expiation for our sins.

May 6 - 10, 2024 is National Teacher Appreciation Week. I think it is wise and wonderful to recognize our teachers at the end of the school year as they look forward to releasing their students back into the care of their parents and/or caregivers. I am immensely grateful for all the teachers I have been blessed with, beginning with my parents (who were great teachers especially in the ways of faith and prayer) and continuing into the present time! St. Thomas Aquinas is the patron saint of teachers and students. Here is a prayer written by St. Thomas: Grant me, O Lord my God, a mind to know you, a heart to seek you the wisdom to find you, a way of life pleasing to you, faithful perseverance in waiting for you and a hope of finally embracing you. Amen.
