Fishing with St. James

It is always good to be reminded what being a follower of Jesus Christ is all about. Love of God and love of Neighbor. All of the law and the prophets, which is basically the entire Old Testament including the historical books, is about love of God and of neighbor.
It is easy to love God, at least on a basic level. To say I love God is recognizing His goodness and His providential care for me. But to love the Lord God with “all my heart and soul and mind is a little more of a challenge. Is there any part of my mind that is not in love with God? Is any part of my heart, my desires and passions not in love with God? Jesus is not pointing a finger, but is pointing to what the purpose of a faith -filled life is. Love of God always comes first, then love of neighbor.
As I read the second part of the command to love neighbor as myself, I look directly at the first reading from the Book of Deuteronomy about the alien and the widow. I think of current situations with immigration issues and so many people who feel as they are looked down upon because of race or where they where born. I think the Lord is really asking us to open our eyes to how He sees every human person made in His image, White or Black, Mexican or Asian. All are made in the image of God and deserve dignity and to be treated as a brother or sister.
