Fishing with St. James

Sunday, August 6, 2017

A feast is a day of special significance on the Roman Catholic Church calendar. The church ranks special days in the calendar in this order: solemnity, feast, and memorial. In common usage the word feast is used to cover almost any special saint’s day, such as the “feast of St. Patrick” which is an optional memorial or the “feast of St. Joseph” which is a solemnity. Some solemnities are Holy Days of Obligation like the “Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary” coming up on August 15th.

Feasts include some special events in the lives of Jesus and Mary; days associated with apostles, evangelists, and archangels; and days of historical significance. The celebration of Our Lady of Guadalupe is observed as a feast in the United States. Locally, feasts are observed for the principal patron of the diocese, the anniversary of the cathedral’s dedication, the patron saint of a parish. For our parish the “feast of St. James”, on July 25th, will always replace the Sunday liturgy.

Mass on a feast day includes the Glory to God and special readings from the lectionary. When certain feasts fall on a Sunday they replace the Sunday liturgy. That is why this weekend rather than the 18th Sunday in Ordinary time we will celebrate the “feast of the Transfiguration”. This feast appears on August 6th every year on the church’s calendar. This date is 40 days before the “feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross” on September 14th. You will see the connection between the two feasts when you read Matthew 17:9, “Jesus charged them, "Do not tell the vision to anyone until the Son of Man has been raised from the dead."

I pray you will listen carefully to these two verses from the weekend Gospel. The voice from the cloud saying: "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him." And that like Peter, James and John, Jesus comes to you and touches you saying, "Rise, and do not be afraid."

I AM Joseph your brother, Fr. Joe Hannappel
